OnePlus 9 Pro Review

one plus 1 1200

Since introducing the “Flagship Killer,” OnePlus has dethroned the concept of offering premium smartphones at an affordable price point. The powerful features necessary to compete in the premium market make the OnePlus 9 Pro a welcome addition to the flagship community. This is whenever the Chinese brand first has collaborated with a camera organization (Hasselblad) to offer a revived camera arrangement that would be useful.

The device undoubtedly guarantees long-term performance thanks to its powerful Snapdragon 888 SoC, massive RAM, and 120Hz high refresh rate Fluid AMOLED display. But even with the polished product, the OnePlus 9 Pro’s premium price tag can be justified by the new features’ ability to lift the old curse. In our review, we learn.

Price of the OnePlus 9 Pro in India: OnePlus 9 Pro specifications: Rs 64,999 for 8GB RAM/128GB storage; Rs 69,999 for 12GB RAM/128GB storage 6.7-inch Fluid AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC, 8GB/12GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of internal storage, a 4,500mAh battery, a 16MP front-facing camera, 48MP+50MP+8MP+2MP rear-facing cameras, OxygenOS 11 based on Android 11, 65W Warp Charge, and 50W wireless charge.

The OnePlus 9 Pro does not stand out in terms of design. The phone’s premium glass sandwich remains, and its aesthetics are identical to those of the previous version. The placement of the camera, which has been moved to the left corner, is the only small change you’ll notice. The phone has a tall body and a tapered back that blends in seamlessly with the display on the edges. The antenna bands are embedded in a metal frame on the glossy, reflective glass back that OnePlus has created.

The layout of the ports and buttons also stays the same. The power button is on the right, the volume rockers are on the left, and the OnePlus alert slider is slightly higher up on the right edge. The hybrid SIM slot and dual-slot stereo speakers are surrounded by the USB-C 3.1 port on the bottom. The phone is good ergonomically; despite the fact that it feels quite large in the hand, the seamless edges provide a good grip (though they are slippery).

In terms of the rear, OnePlus has included a rectangular camera module to house the quad-camera setup, which is branded Hasselblad. We received the Morning Mist model, which, despite its premium appearance, is susceptible to fingerprints and smudges. If you need to quickly check your face before a shoot, the glossy back panel can also be used as a second mirror.

In terms of the cameras, two of the four have lenses encased in a metal ring that protrudes significantly from the body, while the remaining two remain attached to the body. The OnePlus 9 Pro’s design philosophy is nothing new, just as it was in the previous model, with the exception of the fact that it is a fingerprint magnet and a little bit slippery.

If you recall, the OnePlus 8 Pro’s 60Hz standard refresh rate was doubled last year. The OnePlus 9 Pro has the same 120Hz high refresh rate. HDR10+ is supported and the display supports QHD+ resolution. The display provides sufficient brightness in direct sunlight with a peak brightness level of over 1000 nits. Five color profiles allow you to adjust contrast and saturation. While the natural profile provides true-to-tone colors, the Vivid default settings slightly shift to a cooler tone.

The colors are true, and there is no brightness level leakage or deep blacks. The phone’s Vibrant Color effect Pro and Motion graphics smoothing are two notable features. The latter upscales videos by inserting additional frame rates, whereas the former optimizes the video’s colors to make them appear vibrant. The feature works well and plays back smoothly, but it works best when playing live-action or animated series.

The display is set to 120 Hz by default, but the phone uses adaptive mode, which, depending on the content, switches the refresh rate back to 60 Hz. An optical in-display fingerprint sensor that is both accurate and responsive is built into the phone.

The OnePlus 9 Pro’s display is among the best in its class, with vivid colors, fluid swipes, quick touch response, and excellent sunlight legibility. The display’s prowess can be seen in a variety of activities, including gaming, swiping browsers, and streaming content on OTT platforms, thanks to the QHD+ resolution and 120Hz combination. The display detected ghost touches near the curved edges, particularly when playing games in which the fingers kept clenching the device from all sides, causing palm rejection to be my only issue.

Benchmarks and Performance:

The new flagship from OnePlus gets the same high-end treatment as the previous Pro models. The powerful Snapdragon 888 mobile platform from Qualcomm is included in the OnePlus 9 Pro, and it can support up to 12GB of RAM. First, let’s talk about the synthetic benchmark tests. The new OnePlus phone scored 1123 points in the single-core Geekbench test and 3665 points in the multi-core Geekbench test. The device received 3214 points on the lowest loop scorecard and 5752 points on the highest loop scorecard during the 3D Mark stress test. We have published the real-world usage report because benchmark results can be manipulated, but the OnePlus 9 Pro performed well in the multi-core test.

Even so, it is anticipated that performance will surpass zenith given the hardware’s power. In point of fact, the OnePlus 9 Pro is able to provide a fluid experience. The phone can do anything, from quickly switching between apps to playing 3D games and opening multiple tabs. The vibration engine makes the haptic feedback precise. Competing in Call of Duty: I didn’t notice any stutter in Mobile-Day of Reckoning, Real Racing 3 (EA), or Genshin Impact at the highest graphics settings.

With no frame lag, the phone could render graphics to their highest quality. I experienced heating issues, particularly while playing Genshin Impact, despite the fact that the gameplay was fairly consistent across the board. The left edge of the metal frame heated up so much after I throttled the game for about 45 minutes that I had to turn it off. I hope this problem is fixed by OnePlus via a firmware update. Despite this, the OnePlus 9 Pro still promises to perform admirably, with a rapid touch response rate and fluid graphics rendering. It barely skips a beat even though it gets a little hotter. The wide display’s 120Hz refresh rate and Dolby Atmos surround sound elevate the gaming experience even further.

With the OxygenOS 11 update, OnePlus altered the interface’s visual appearance. Even though the Chinese brand improved, the Android experience is no longer the same. The user interface may be appealing to first-time users, but those upgrading from an older OnePlus phone may initially find it challenging to adjust. Having said that, the brand-new OxygenOS skin comes with a slew of bespoke enhancements. You can start with customization by switching from Roboto to OnePlus Sans, which now has a thinner typeface and more space.

It takes some time to get used to the small layout, but at least it doesn’t take up too much space. You also get in-house Google OS features like Chat Bubbles, Conversations, Notification history, and permission features because the custom interface is based on Android 11.

The ability to send photos directly from the camera app is one interesting feature of the new OxygenOS interface. Simply launch the camera app, snap a picture, and hold down the quick view button to begin. It will display options to either save the image as a note, share it on social media, or scan it with the Google lens. The ability to quickly access the brightness level from the notification shade is yet another useful feature. The brightness toggle bar is now located directly below the quick settings icons, as opposed to being accessible by lowering the entire notification shade.

In Utilities, there is also a Quick Launch option that can be activated by using the optical fingerprint reader. The quick launch option will appear when you unlock the device and press and hold the fingerprint authentication area. Apps can be added and customized to suit your preferences.

Other features include scheduling the built-in dark mode, RAM Boost, a beta version of Canvas that creates a sketch of your selfies, fingerprint animation, and a horizon light that blinks whenever a notification appears on the device. In a nutshell, OxygenOS still employs a straightforward approach that is simple to get used to.

When compared to its predecessor, the OnePlus 9 Pro’s 4,500mAh battery is slightly smaller this time around. The phone comes with a 50W wireless charger and wired 65W fast charging technology. The phone’s battery life was 9 hours and 42 minutes in the PC Mark test.

Regarding actual use, I was concerned that the high refresh rate would significantly reduce battery life, but thanks to optimization and LTPO technology, this was not the case. I could get about 7 hours of backup in full-res 120Hz mode.

I could easily get over 9 hours of battery backup with casual use, with a 15-16 percent charge remaining until the end of the day. The 65W wired charger takes about 40 minutes to charge the device to its maximum percentage with regard to charging speed. On the other hand, the 50W wireless charger requires approximately 47 to 48 minutes to charge the battery completely.

The optics are one area where the OnePlus 9 Pro continues to sing the same old saga, despite meeting almost all of the requirements for the premium flagship label. The 48-megapixel sensor in the primary camera slot of the OnePlus 9 Pro has been reserved once more by the Chinese manufacturer. However, it now has a Sony IMX789 sensor instead of a Sony IMX689 sensor. 50 megapixels have been added to the ultra-wide sensor. The phone also has a telephoto lens with 8 megapixels and a depth sensor with 2 megapixels for taking portraits.

Despite OnePlus’ use of a Hasselblad-branded camera setup, the camera software is not only flawed but also full of flaws. The area in close proximity to the camera module has a tendency to heat up excessively when shooting during daylight, limiting camera usage. The primary camera has trouble keeping focus on the subject, especially when zooming in or using the Super-macro mode, despite the large sensor’s obvious ability to produce good dynamic range and shallow depth of field. The images produced by the super macro mode are blurry even when the required distance from the subject is maintained.

In daylight, the primary camera is able to produce photos with good texture and detail. The ultra-wide sensor produces images with excellent center focus as well, but distortion can be seen around the edges. The images tend to be brighter and the shadows have sufficient details in the Nightscape mode. However, the ultra-wide sensor does not provide comparable performance. The colors and exposure balance are decent, but there is aggressive noise in all of the scenes. The OnePlus 9 Pro, like its predecessor, has Pro mode, which lets you change ISO, white balance, shutter speed, exposure, and focus. Additionally, you can capture images in RAW mode, which is useful for post-editing.

Regarding the front camera, good subject separation results in decent selfies and portraits taken in daylight. However, while taking a portrait picture in dim lighting, I noticed a strange color shift and a red outline on my forehead. Despite this, the non-portrait clicks turned out well, with just the right amount of sharpness and dynamic range. However, the night shots are just average, with noise creeping in and pale skin in low light.

It’s important to note that OnePlus recently released a software update to improve noise, white balance, and nighttime brightness. The problem with focusing persists despite the fact that the white balance has been adjusted to some extent. However, the update has eliminated a glitch that occurred in a low-light shot. Are you unsure of what I’m referring to? The sample is provided for your review.

Error in the OnePlus 9 Pro camera:

In a nutshell, the camera software is not up to par, and the sensors deliver a variety of outcomes. Although the quad-camera array produces images with excellent dynamic range and color, it can occasionally oversaturate them. Another disappointment is the inconsistent autofocus, and the sluggish software just dampens the excitement surrounding Hasselblad. I hope these issues are fixed by OnePlus in a subsequent update.

Review of the OnePlus 9 Pro:

OnePlus smartphones are no longer considered to be “Flagship Killers.” The Chinese brand has begun charging a hefty price for its flagship phones, despite still not being as expensive as the iPhone, in order to maintain its status as a premium brand. With its class-leading high refresh rate, powerful hardware, immersive audio quality, and super-fast wireless charging support, the OnePlus 9 Pro unquestionably capitalizes on most of the necessary features.

The OnePlus 9 Pro’s camera, on the other hand, performs slightly below par. We advise OnePlus users to resist the temptation of the Hasselblad branding and to wait until OnePlus releases a software update to address these prominent issues.

Should you go with this new flagship from OnePlus? The OnePlus 9 Pro will undoubtedly ring all those bells and whistles if you are looking for the fastest Android phone currently available that not only offers a great display experience but also hyperfast performance and an exceptionally fast charging solution. Most people will be happy with the Hasselblad-tuned cameras, but photographers might like the iPhone 12 as an alternative.
